Protest against Gender Discrimination with Male Nurses in Punjab

All Punjab Male Nurses have given a call for peaceful protest against the discriminatory policy of Punjab Government against male nurses in government jobs.

Recently, the Punjab government has announced thousands of government jobs for nurses. However, in contradiction to the policies, guidelines, and practices in other provinces; all of these vacancies are for females only.

For example, 1000 government jobs were announced in April and 750 were announced in June this year. All of these were for female nurses only. More recently, the Punjab government has announced 4753 regular government jobs through Punjab Public Service Commission but only female nurses. Moreover, the Finance Department of the Punjab Government has also approved 972 nurses jobs but are expected to be for females only.

Whereas, in all other provinces of Pakistan there is no such discrimination with male nurses. There are opportunities for both male and female nurses according to the criteria devices by Pakistan Nursing Council. For example, in the recent advertisement of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission, there are equal opportunities for both genders. Recently, 98 male nurses have also been appointed at the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, the provincial capital of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

All Punjab Male Nurses, an informal association of male nurses in Punjab, are of the view that discrimination against them is the violation of the Constitution of Pakistan.  Therefore, they have announced a peaceful protest tomorrow, 24th August 2017, in front of Lahore Press Club.  A huge number of male and female nurses are appreciating their decision and many are showing their support on social media.
